Salaam Baalak Trust is among the foremost NGOs in India - for the support of Street Kids & Homeless Children. Established 1989 & starting with just 1 Shelter at Dongri - today with the support of the community & administration (BMC) - we have 5 Centres & 4 Contact Points across Mumbai, Thane, Kalyan & Solapur.
OUR TRUSTEES
The backbone & shadow strength of our Trust - each of our Trustees have multiple skill sets, training & experience to tend to the delicate needs of Homeless Children at our centres. Ever hands-on & always available, they build on the strengths of Salaam Baalak Trust & lead the Trust’s objectives by example.
Mrs Zarin Gupta - Founder Trustee
Mrs Zarin Gupta is a trained Medical Social Worker from the Tata Inst.of Social Sciences. She has worked at major Govt.hospitals, attending to Psychological problems of Children & Women from marginal backgroung. Mrs.Zarin worked closely with Film Director Mira Nair to set-up Salaam Baalak Trust (SBT). Being the Managing Trustee she continues to work tirelessly to improve the Nutrition, Education & Health-care facilities for the Trust’s needy kids.
Mrs Pratima Jamwal - Counseling Trustee
Mrs Pratima Jamwal, is a highly experienced Medical and Psychiatric Social Worker (MPSW) from the Tata Inst. of Social Sciences. (TISS). She’s a consultant psychotherapist and a professional counselor, with a well-established private practice. She has highly specialised background in relationship counselling, anger & stress management, dealing with behavioral problems and addiction. With SBT since 1996, her deep insight is an asset to the Trust.
Mr Taher Attarwala - Admin Trustee
Mr Taher bhai is Real estate consultant & Contractor. His astute vision & experience in dealing with the real world, day-to-day problems help the trust in good stead. Taher bhai is associated with SBT since last 15 yrs & and deals with the administrative part at SBT. Alongwith his busy schedule, he devotes dedicated time to make sure the daily functions, accounting, & admin related issues are smoothed out at Salaam Baalak Trust.
Our Mission
Salaam Baalak Trust provides street children with the opportunity to experience the joys of childhood through its various centers across the city of Mumbai.
Salaam Baalak Trust was first established as a direct result of the movie Salaam Bombay! which used the power of cinema to depict the lives of street children. The film was made with real street children & after winning much acclaim the film makers decided to create a trust for the Shelter & care of these children. And so was built Salaam Baalak Trust - a safe haven for Homeless kids providing all that a regular child should get for his / her growth.

1989 - The first center In Mumbai was opened at Dongri, in association with Maharashtra State Women’s Council.
1996 - The Night Shelter was established on the same premises.
2000 - As the organization continued to grow, a second contact point was established behind a canteen at Girgaon Chowpatty from where it moved into a garden, to a pump house and, eventually, into our own shed, with indispensable cooperation from Jawahar Bal Bhawan and our valued donors.
2007 - We started a night shelter for boys in Kalyan.
Also a milestone in 2007 for Salaam Baalak Trust was the rehabilitation of some of the beggar children of Mumbai. We enrolled 75 children as boarders in Sholapur Ashram Schools.
2010 - The Career Project began with our first training class in May 2010. To date, several youths have begun training, gained professional skill-sets & been hired with live jobs in Companies.
2015 - A big, spacious centre exclusively for our Girl beneficiaries was set-up in Malad.
